Anokhi, for everything uniquely Indian by MetroMela
What you see - Located in Milestone building on Road No. 10, Banjara Hills, Anokhi comes across as a breath of fresh air. The season of spring flashes across your mind as soon as you enter this store. A wall-photograph of a bedspread and cushions is set against a stone wall. It is framed using wooden blocks (that are used for block printing) and looks quite innovative. A purple taupe coloured comfy settee with contrasting white cushions relieves the weak-kneed.
What you get - Anokhi has everything made in Jaipur. Most likely what you pick up will have block prints. And what makes this store different from those around it is its affordability.
Bedspreads, quilts, napkins and handbags are stationed across the main entrance in order to capture a visitor's eye. Quilts in pink, crème, red, green, floral colors and typical Rajasthani prints are stocked on the shelves. Single-colored ones with khari prints (work in silver or gold ink) come across as plain, but nonetheless attractive.
They have bed sheets and spreads in four sizes -- baby (4x4 ft), single (5x7.5 ft), single large (6x9ft), queen (7.5x9ft) and king (9x9). Comparatively different from those stocked, is a navy blue queen-size bedspread with gudri work (thick stitch runnind down the length of the material) in white and light yellow for Rs. 2,100. The price for bed spreads and quilts generally range from Rs. 480 to Rs. 2,150. You may come across some high-priced exquisite ones with mirror work, embroidery on patches and gudri work.
There is even a nightwear section. Here you have kaftans, pyjamas, nightgowns and dressing gowns. Dressing gowns are in free size and you have ones till the knee and those till the ankle. The longer ones are priced at Rs. 960 while the shorter ones are at about Rs. 750. Most of them have floral designs on a white base. Nightdresses are priced at over Rs. 800.
Here the clothes are arranged according to the colors and each such set is called a story. So in each story you have trousers, tunics, kurtas, skirts and patialas. Most trousers here are in cotton and in colors such as crème, maroon, brown, black, red and peacock green. The only one astray was a black trouser with gudri work giving it an effect of pin stripes.
Kurtas in kotaand with lining are a pretty sight. They are priced at Rs. 1,300 and usually have two shades with the division being below the bust. These could be teamed with a crinkled wrap-around red skirt with simple khari prints at the base. They have tops for as low as Rs. 330 too. They come in peacock green, mauve, taupe, cream and red.
They have kurtas in Chanderi silk, most of which fall elegantly even on a hanger. The skirts here are also refreshing. You have layered gypsy skirts, crinkled skirts, polka dotted ones and also wraparounds. And then there are sarees too. Though the range is limited, they have it in chiffon, kotaand cotton and the prices are from Rs. 850 to Rs. 2,250. For men there are short kurtas, long kurtas and shirts apart from boxers for Rs. 350.
In the accessories department, they have chiffon dupattas, most on a white-base along with dainty scarves. Search some more and you will find pretty sarongs here. They have block printed handkerchiefs and sequined belts with gudri work too. There are tablemats and door curtains too. The handbags here are tagged between Rs. 330 and Rs. 750. These are mostly in corduroys with sequins on it or quilted and with block prints on them. They have these holdall travelling bags for Rs. 480, toiletry bags for Rs. 160 and pencil pouches for Rs 90. Silver, gold-plated and wooden jewelry is there too.
Our verdict - If you like "Indianness" in your clothes, then you will fall in love with this store for all its block prints, uncluttered arrangements and affordable range. The staff is helpful and will help you choose your stuff. All sleeveless tops have a shoulder strap, which is thoughtful. The store manager says the Jaipur block printers are given their due share from these, so that is heartening to hear. They have parking space too.
