Why are so many blacks claiming white heritage?
Over the past few years I've heard tons of african-americans claim some sort of european heritage, usually irish, english, or german. I was wondering how likely it is that such a large percentage of african-americans have some european ethnicity in them? Years ago, a black person would just say they were black and that would be that. But today it isn't uncommon to hear them also claim european or native american ancestory also. Is this just a fad, or is it really true? Is the reason why it is happening now because it was not accepted by society to claim this heritage in the past?
ok, the point was about why there is a big thing about claiming white heritage now and not in the past. you didn't see this in the 1920s. that is what i was getting at
Why wouldn't anyone claim their heritage if it is theirs? There really is no such thing as a pure race on this earth any more. Well, maybe in remote places that have no contact with the outside world. In this country when slavery was legal many of the "masters" would rape the women and have children and those children had children and so on so yes, many black Americans can claim European heritage. My family comes from Ireland and when coming to the U.S. married blacks and native American women so yes, I claim my Irish and native American history as well as my black and puerto rican history proudly and really do not care who it bothers. It is not a fad or anything new it is just me and I am proud of all the blood that came together to make me.
